Do you long for beautiful, natural family photos of your children, but struggle to capture that right moment? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Capturing energetic kids requires a huge amount of patience and the right approach. And to be completely honest with you – even I find photoshoots with kids quite demanding sometimes!
Children are full of emotions – laughing playfully one second and showing sadness or stubbornness the next. But that is where the real magic of childhood lies.
“As a family photographer, I’ll show you how to prepare for a photoshoot with kids based on their age, so you walk away with gorgeous memories completely stress-free and without pulling your hair out.”

Why Every Age Demands a Different Approach
Photographing children isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every age group has its own specifics, developmental milestones, and requires a completely different approach. Take a look at my proven tips on how to photograph kids from the newborn stage all the way to preschoolers.
How to Photograph Newborns? (0 to 30 Days)
- Ideal timing: The first 2 to 3 weeks after birth (up to one month max).
- Why then: Babies spend most of their time sleeping during this period, staying calm and easy to position. This lets you preserve sweet memories of those tiny feet, hands, and ears in total peace…
💡 Tips for Your Perfect Newborn Photos
- In-Home Sessions (Lifestyle): Instead of a studio, I recommend photographing newborns in the natural comfort of your home. You’ll capture real moments – feeding, changing, or soothing baby to sleep.
- Adapt to Baby’s Rhythm: A newborn photoshoot can take 3 to 4 hours. Feed your baby right before the photographer arrives so they are content and sleep through most of the session.
✨ Real-Life Story (Little Adélka)
Little Adélka’s parents were worried they wouldn’t manage the shoot because she hadn’t slept much on her first night at home. I arrived at their house, her mom and I poured a cup of tea, and we didn’t rush anything. Adélka was fed right in bed with her mom. The result was incredibly tender photos where her mom gently holds Adélka’s tiny hand and feet. No forced poses-just pure love and the cozy feel of home.
How to Photograph Babies at 3 to 4 Months?
During this period, the baby is much more aware of their surroundings, holding their head up, responding to voices, and sharing their first intentional smiles.
💡 Tips for 3 to 4 Month Old Babies
- Fewer Props, More Authenticity: Wicker baskets and tiny hats are sweet, but the most beautiful photos happen in mom and dad’s arms.
- Use the Comfort of Home: At home, everything you need is right at hand and your baby feels completely safe. You can also take a breath and recharge during the session in familiar surroundings.
✨ Real-Life Story (Playful Little Radek)
Four-month-old Radek was curiosity personified. Whenever he saw the camera, he stared curiously, but hid his smiles. All it took was his dad lifting him up in the air to play “airplane.” Radek burst into laughter like a true champion. His dad’s hands gave him total security, and photos full of joyful eyes were captured in a matter of minutes.
How to Photograph Babies at 6 to 8 Months?
This period brings a major milestone – the baby is discovering the world, learning to sit up independently, responding to their name, and communicating actively. This is when their true personality starts to show.
💡 Tips for 6 to 8 Month Old Babies
- Favorite Toys in Frame: Choose softer, natural toys that won’t draw unnecessary attention away from the child.
- The Bright-Color Trick: Sometimes, vibrant colors work wonders! When hidden right behind the camera, they catch the baby’s attention perfectly, make them smile, and direct their gaze straight into the lens.
- Neutral Clothing Without Distractions: Avoid neon colors and large logos on clothes.
- Best Color Choices: Go for timeless pastel and earth tones – soft yellow, sage green, beige, white, light blue, or navy blue.
✨ Real-Life Story (Little Explorer Oli)
During the shoot with seven month old Oli, I brought out her favorite knit teddy bear. Oli was lying on her tummy on a blanket on the bed, pushed herself up after a moment, and curiously examined the bear behind the camera. Her mom and dad stood right behind me clapping gently. Oli was beaming with joy, and we captured that gorgeous childhood wonder without a single forced look at the lens. The entire photo felt so complete, also thanks to Oli’s mom choosing a summer dress with subtle seahorse and starfish patterns in gentle colors.
How to Photograph Toddlers? (1 to 3 Years)
Kids are starting to walk, run, and express their first defiant phase. Forced posing simply doesn’t work with them.
💡 Tips for Toddlers (1 to 3 Years)
- Sessions Through Play: Forget phrases like “Say cheese.” Capture kids in natural motion, running, and playing. (After all, there’s no other way at this age anyway, right?)
- Head Outdoors: The best locations are parks, meadows, and gardens where kids have total freedom.
- Stylish Accessories: Delicate floral or solid headbands and crochet dresses matching mom look beautiful on girls, while simple button-downs or hats add instant charm to boys.
✨ Real-Life Story (Little Eliška)
How to Photograph Preschoolers & Older Kids? (4 to 6+ Years)
Children’s personalities are in full bloom. They can already communicate directly with the photographer and build a friendship.
💡 Tips for Preschoolers & Older Kids
- Outdoors Over Studios: Kids get bored quickly in front of a white backdrop. Heading into nature is a great choice – just avoid busy playgrounds with too many distractions. However, once kids can hold their attention a bit, a playground can actually be a great spot for a few relaxed, dynamic action shots.
- Outfits for Family Photos: Coordinate colors and style across the whole family. Knit sweaters, dresses, or denim jackets without distracting prints work brilliantly.
✨ Real-Life Story (Unstoppable Hanka)
Four year old Hanka had tons of energy on shoot day, and the word “sit down” simply didn’t exist for her. Instead of forcing her to pose, we turned it into a game: her parents picked her and her brother up and made rockstar horns with their hands. Hanka squealed with joy and ran through the grass. The result was incredibly lively, dynamic photos full of laughter that radiated pure childhood joy. And that’s what it’s all about!
Capture Memories That Only Grow More Valuable!
Preserving childhood memories through high-quality family photos is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give your family. Years later, childhood photos still bring us peace, joy, and a vivid reminder of moments that will never happen again.
And remember – even when photographing kids takes a bit out of you or me, the final result and preserved memories are always 100% worth it!
“I believe the most beautiful photos happen the moment you forget about the camera and simply enjoy the present moment with your children.”
